A rich heritage of serving the people of west tennessee.

J.T. Fawcett, Founder
Fawcett Lumber Company
(1904-1982)

It’s said that necessity is the mother of invention …

That saying defines the life and legacy of what J.T. Fawcett created in the little town of Hickory Valley, Tennessee more than 65 years ago.

J.T. Fawcett (1904-1982), along with his wife Opal, started in the timber business in the early 1940s and opened a green lumber yard selling “green lumber” that was trucked to the current Fawcett Lumber site and transported by rail car to Memphis and points both east and west.

As a resident of Hickory Valley, Mr. Fawcett continued to run his business but saw the need for quality lumber as Hickory Valley and the surrounding area began to grow.  In the 1950’s, Mr. Fawcett’s business evolved to become a retail lumber company, and Fawcett Lumber Co. was soon bustling with customers.

Providing quality lumber for building what Hickory Valley and towns all around West Tennessee would become, Mr. Fawcett had a vision — a vision much bigger than just lumber.

In the 1960s, Mr. Fawcett started building homes and commercial buildings which included a grocery store (which he operated).  Always a family man, Mr. Fawcett enlisted his four boys — Lavoy (current owner Mac’s father), Travis (who operated Fawcett Lumber for 42 years), Davis and Mike — to help run the growing businesses.

In the late 1970s, J.T. Fawcett retired, allowing his sons to carry on the legacy of what he began in 1956 — Fawcett Lumber Co.

It’s said that J.T. Fawcett had a presence about him that few men before or since have possessed. He cared for the people who worked for him and, in turn, they cared deeply for him.  He was a husband, father and business man.

After spending much of their working life in the family business, Mr. Fawcett’s four sons retired in 2020.  With that, you may think that’s where the story ends, but the truth is, the story (and Mr. Fawcett’s legacy) has a new chapter and bright future ahead.

In 2020, Mac Fawcett and Drew Fawcett (brothers) along with Anne (Mac’s sister), stepped in to run Fawcett Lumber Co.

Those who live in Hickory Valley (and the surrounding area) know that Fawcett Lumber Co. offers a whole lot more than just quality lumber.  Fawcetts is the one-stop-shop for those in the building trades as well as those installing a fence, fixing a sink, painting a room, or fixing something that needs to work.  They stock quality tools, hardware, automotive and farm supply, plumbing, electrical, building materials and much, much more.

As Mac, Drew and Anne look to the future, they are serious about continuing to build on the Fawcett name.  So going forward, they’ve decided to call the business their family has operated for more than 65 years …
